Erie will welcome competitors from across the region for the United States Canine Scent Sports (USCSS) Scentwork Trial this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Trinity Global Methodist Church, located at 3952 Pine Ave. in Erie.
The competition will feature dogs of all breeds and skill levels over six months old, showcasing their scent detection abilities in a series of timed elements. The Classic Trail will test dogs and their handlers as they search all four elements: Interior, Exterior, Vehicle and Container. If they receive a qualifying score in all four elements, they will earn a Classic title at their competition level. Four levels are competing: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Senior.
The event will also feature a game called Copy Cat, which tests the dog’s ability to work independently of its handler.
“Canine scent sports are an incredible way to showcase the intelligence and teamwork between dogs and handlers,” said Katara Peters, a trainer at Groovy Pooch who is a certified trainer through the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, and a judge for the United States Canine Scent Sports and United Kennel Club. “We’re excited to bring this trial to Erie and allow the community to experience the excitement firsthand.”
The event is expected to attract as many as 30 dogs and their handlers from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio.
